Wendell Beattie Obituary

Wendell W, Beattie, 80, of Mt. Pleasant, died Sunday, May 25, 2014 at his residence where he was born and lived nearly all of his life.
A funeral service for Wendell Beattie will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, May 28 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The Reverend Deborah J. Stowers, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Cremation rites will be accorded following the funeral service with burial of ashes at a later date in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 6-8 PM Tuesday evening.

Wendell William Beattie was born on the family farm home, rural Mt. Pleasant on January 23, 1934. He was the son of William Raymond and Harriet Lorene (nee Stinson) Beattie. Wendell was baptized and received his early religious education at the former Beulah Methodist Church, just south of his home. He attended Sherman School, Canaan Township through the 5th grade, and completed his education in New London, graduating from New London High School in 1951. On November 24, 1955 (Thanksgiving Day) at the Methodist Church in Biggsville, IL, Wendell was united in marriage to Laura May (nee Kelly) Beattie.
Following his education, Wendell entered the United States Navy. He entered on February 23, 1953 and received his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Chicago. He served aboard the USS Daniel E. Joy on the Great Lakes as a Gunners Mate during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged at Great Lakes on February 21, 1955. For 30 years, Wendell was employed by the Champion Spark Plug Company in West Burlington, retiring in 1989. During that time, Wendell also farmed in Canaan and New London Townships, part of the farm being a Century Farm in the Beattie Family. For a few years, he was employed part time as a truck driver for Twin States in Mt. Pleasant.
Wendell was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant, the Wayland Tractor Club, the Big Creek Tractor Club and was a life member of the American Legion Robert Tribby Post #58 of Mt. Pleasant.
Those thankful for sharing in Wendell's life include his wife of 58 years, Laura of Mt. Pleasant; 4 children - Beverly Beattie of Lakewood, CO, Barbara Beattie and fiancé Bob Harding of Ft. Mill, SC and twin sons - William Ward Beattie of Belmont, MI and Raymond Kelly Beattie and wife Sherri of Ottumwa, IA; 6 grandchildren - James William Beattie and Ariel Beattie of Belmont, MI, and Kyle LaRue, Dylan Beattie, Amy & Emilee Beattie, all of Ottumwa;
His parents and a sister, Camille Moore, precede Wendell in death.
