Lyle Thornburg Obituary

Lyle Edward Thornburg, 69, of New London, died Monday, November 11, 2013 at his residence.
A graveside funeral service for Lyle will be held at 11:30 A.M. on Friday, November 15 at the Blakeway Cemetery, rural Danville, IA. The Reverend Jim Roth, Pastor of the New London United Methodist Church, will officiate. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM on Thursday, November 14 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM on Thursday. Online condolences may be sent to www.kimzeyfuneralhome.com.
Lyle was born April 16, 1944 in Mount Pleasant. He was the son of Melvin Edward "Jim" and Betty Louise (nee Darnell) Thornburg. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1964. He married Shirley Jean Hobart. The couple later divorced.
For four years, Lyle worked at Bentler's Texaco and Phillips 66 Service Stations. He then worked nine years at the Spahn & Rose Lumber Company. For 30 years, Lyle was employed by the J.I. Case Company in Burlington. Lyle worked in many different departments for J.I. Case. He retired from J.I. Case in 2005. During his working career, Lyle also worked part time for the Otho Fertilizer Company and as a farmhand for several area farmers.
Lyle was a member of the United Auto Workers Local #806 He was a 40+ year member of the International Order of Oddfellows (I.O.O.F.) Lodge of New London. Lyle had formerly served on the New London Fire Department. In his spare time, Lyle was very active in the Southeast Iowa Ridge Blasters Snowmobile Club. Hunting was a treasured pastime for Lyle. He also enjoyed tractor pulls with Larry Reed.
Those thankful for sharing in Lyle's life include two children and their spouses, Todd & Kim Thornburg of New London and Cindy & Jon Phillips of Gainesville, Wisconsin; three grandchildren - Jordan, Braden and Rachele and two great grandchildren - Aubry Kay and Kyler.
Lyle is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Bob Thornburg.
