Lyle Swan Obituary

Lyle Vernon Swan, 98, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away at 12:00 AM on Thursday, March 14, 2019 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.

Lyle was born on August 4, 1920 in rural New London to Charles Oscar San and Charlotte Pearle Munshower Swan. He was the 8th of 11 children. Lyle attended Hickory Grove country schools and graduated from Mount Pleasant High School in 1939. He entered the United States Navy on July 1, 1943 and rose to the rank of Seaman Fist Class, serving during WW II in the Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on April 4, 1946 at the USN Personnel Separation Center in Minneapolis. Upon his return, he graduated from
Iowa Wesleyan College in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business.

Lyle enjoyed woodworking, gardening and being outside. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinal fan.

Lyle was a hard worker and had various employments. He worked as a cab driver for Vera Shafer Cab Company, worked at Drug Town and drove a school bus. He worked for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant (IAAP0 as a heavy artillery inspector until 1975. After that, he worked in maintenance for Henry County Health Center and the First United Methodist Church. Later he worked part-time for the City of Mount Pleasant at the Senior Center and public library, finally fully retiring at the spry age of 91.

On October 5, 1952, Lyle married Lola Audriene Messer at the Trenton Methodist Church. The celebrated their 66th anniversary in 2018.

Survivors include: wife Lola, son Dennis Swan (Kim) of Midway, KY and daughter Deanna Swan (Stephon Joseph) of Framingham, MA; 4 grandchildren: Laura Schlegel (Hans) of Nashville, TN, Travis Swan (Darby) of Spring Hill, KS, Kelsey Swan of Dallas, TX and Jacob Swan (Anastasiya) of Lexington, KY; 3 great grandchildren - Annika and Stein Schlegel and Vladimir Swan. Lyle is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by brothers, Dallas, Rex, Dale, Glen, Fletcher and Robert Swan and sisters Mildred Neil, Betty Mertens, Helen Prickett and Twyla Swan.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM on Saturday, March 16 at the First United Methodist Church with reception following. The Reverend Deborah J. Stowers will officiate. Visitation will be at the Kimzey Funeral Home on Friday from 12-9 PM with the family present from 5-7 PM. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Eastern Iowa Honor Flight (eihonorflight.org).
