Lorain Ahrens Obituary

Lorain E. Ahrens, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, formerly of Elkader and Volga, IA died Wednesday, February 05, 2014 at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Her body has been donated to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology for medical research. A graveside memorial service will be held at a later date at the East Side Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa. There will be no visitation at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. Mrs. Ahrens, the former Lorain E. Leuchtenmacher, was born December 18, 1928 at home in rural Elgin, Iowa. She was the daughter of George and Louise (Spichalsky) Leuchtenmacher. She began her education at the Highland Township School in Clayton County, Iowa and graduated from Elkader High School. In 1947, she married Jack Zuercher. The couple later divorced. In 1974, she was united in marriage to Melvin Ahrens. Mr. Ahrens died in 1986.
Lorain was employed by Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids during the 1950's. During the early 1960's, she owned and operated City Cab in Mt. Vernon, IA. She later moved to Washington, IA where she worked at Advance Ross. She then accepted a position at the former Vega Industries in Mt. Pleasant. Lorain moved to the state of Washington and later Arkansas, working various jobs. She returned to her home area and settled in Volga, IA. During that time, Lorain was employed by the Alpine Inn in Elkader and Elkader Community Schools. Lorain was afflicted with Rheumatoid Arthritis since her twenties which eventually forced her into early disability retirement. In 1999, she moved to Mt. Pleasant to be close to her daughter. Since 2006, she had been a resident at the Pleasant Manor Care Center.
Survivors include two daughters - Georgia (Jackie) Taylor of Des Moines and Jackie (Herb) Quayle of Mt. Pleasant; two sons - Forrest (Mona) Zuercher of Georgia and Randy Zuercher of Iowa; four step daughters - Arlene Doeppke, Iva Dean Doeppke and LaVonne Meyer, all of Elkader and Ellen Banse of Cedar Rapids; 10 grandchildren, locally including Tammy (Quayle) Ireland and Bobby Quayle; several step grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren and one nephew.
Her parents, husband, a brother and a niece precede Lorain in death.
