Joyce A. Voss, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, April 3, 2021 at the Sarasota Hospice House in Sarasota, FL.
The funeral service for Joyce will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday, April 14 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. The Reverend David Bracht-Wagner, Senior Pastor, First United Methodist Church and the Rev. Monte Knudsen, Pastor, Faith Christian Outreach Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 8 PM on Tuesday, April 13 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5 to 7 PM Tuesday evening.

Mrs. Voss, the former Joyce Ann Harney, was born September 13, 1932 in Kankakee, IL. She was the daughter of Thomas Harold and Gladys (Green) Harney. The family moved to Michigan, Terre Haute, IN and Aledo, IL before settling in Mt. Pleasant. Joyce graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1950. She then attended Illinois Wesleyan College, graduating in 1954 with a BA in Home Economics. On August 28, 1954 at the First Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, Joyce was united in marriage to Richard George Voss. Mr. Voss preceded her in death on Thursday, November 19, 1998 in Iowa City.
Joyce was a longtime partner with her husband in their business venture. They purchased the Willard Jensen Shell Oil jobbership and formed the Voss Petroleum Company. From Voss Petroleum, they opened several Mustang Market Convenience Stores. Joyce was involved in all aspects of operating the stores. Family, Faith and Friendships were three very important areas of Joyce’s life. She was an active member of First United Methodist Church and its Becomers Sunday School Class. She also enjoyed Bible Studies and worshiping at Faith Christian Outreach Center. Joyce was a longtime swimming instructor, teaching all ages at the municipal pool and the Mt. Pleasant Rec Center. She loved spending time with her family and friends, from camping, horseback riding, supporting athletic teams to Old Threshers, wintering in Florida, traveling, and always, always cheering her kids on. Joyce loved animals and enjoyed having them at her country home, recently enjoying renters Chester (horse) and Jericho (donkey). She will be very missed by her dog, April, her cat, Esther, and her many grand doggies!
Those thankful for sharing in Joyce’s life include her children: Kathleen Suzanne Voss Ockenfels and husband, Andrew Ockenfels, of Riverside, IA; Christopher Thomas Voss of Las Vegas, NV; Sandra Elise (Voss) LaFlamme and husband, Mark LaFlamme, of Sarasota, FL; and Barbara Joyce Voss of Sarasota, FL. Joyce has a grandson, Brandon Christopher Voss, wife Maya Voss, and great granddaughter, Amirah Voss; a sister, Carol Sue Harney Golde and husband, Mark Golde, of Tucson, AZ; a brother-in-law, William Voss and wife, Joanne Voss, Bakersfield, CA; an AFS Foreign Exchange daughter, Michele Fillon Picot, husband Olivier Picot and son Alexis Picot, Paris, France; and Mentee Andi Piro, Mt. Pleasant, IA.
Her parents and husband precede her in death.
