Joan Hemmie Obituary

Joan Hemmie, 81, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, November 5, 2016 in the Iowa City Hospice Unit of Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.
Per Mrs. Hemmie's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service. Cremation rites have been entrusted to the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant.

Mrs. Hemmie, the former Alice Joan Wells, was born March 12, 1935 in Unionville, MO. She was the daughter of Sammy Ford and Myrtle Elizabeth (O'Donnell) Wells. She moved to Ft. Madison as a young child and graduated from Ft. Madison High School. On October 22, 1955 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ft. Madison, Joan was united in marriage to Winsor Mahlon Hemmie, Sr. Mr. Hemmie died Sunday, November 1, 2009 at their residence in Mt. Pleasant.
Mrs. Hemmie was a longtime machine operator for the former Metromail Corporation in Mt. Pleasant, from which she retired. She was baptized at and a member of the United Church of Crawfordsville. She was a longtime member with a group of ladies who attended Curves in Mt. Pleasant. Joan was a gifted and adept seamstress. After her hands would no longer let her sew, she loved to watch the birds and squirrels that her family fed outside her window. She loved to sit and watch them with her beloved puppy dog, "Minnie".
Those thankful for sharing in Joan's life include her 3 children - Sam Hemmie and his wife Tracey of Crawfordsville, Tonda Costas of Muscatine and Winsor Hemmie, Jr. and his wife Kelly of Lockridge; 1 brother and his wife, Donald and Cheri Wills of Mt. Pleasant; 10 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Her parents, husband, a daughter - Johnnie Sue Hemmie, a brother - James Wells and a sister, - Mary Riedl precede Joan in death.
