Obituary

Brian D. Hansen age 77, passed away on January 26, 2023, at Brookdale Potomac Assisted Living Facility in Maryland. He was a husband, father, grandfather, researcher, Eagle Scout, scholar, photographer, videographer, and historian. He served in many roles over the years for his church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

Brian was born November 9, 1945, in Ft. Madison, Iowa to David Hansen and Paula Lesch, he was the oldest of two boys. In his younger years he delivered newspapers for the Mt. Pleasant News, played little league baseball for the Sheaffer Pen team and drums in the Mt. Pleasant High School Concert & Marching band. He was a member of the high school Science Club and the Mt. Pleasant Boy Scouts of America. His scout troop contributed to the model railroad layout inside the Old Thresher’s first railroad depot. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Iowa Wesleyan College, then entered graduate school at Iowa State University.

 He married Linda Cornick in Nauvoo, Illinois in 1969, they would spend the next 53 years together! His education was put on hold to serve in the Army during the conflict in Vietnam. After being trained as a medic, Brian was sent to Zama, Japan with his wife. There he worked as a technician in a medical lab. He and Linda had their first daughter while he was serving his country there. Upon his honorable release from the U.S. Army, Brian was accepted into graduate school at Rice University in Houston, Texas. While working on his master’s degree he and Linda welcomed their second daughter and first son into their family. With three children in tow, they moved to Columbus, Ohio where Brian pursued a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at Ohio State University and continued to grow their family adding another daughter to their family. Upon graduation the growing family moved to Rockville, Maryland where five years later their youngest son was born.

Brian worked as a Biochemist at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research for 33 years before retiring. In retirement he further developed his love of Civil War, World War I and World War II history. Through videography and frequent visits to many sites of historical importance in the U.S. and Europe, he shared his love of history with everyone. His other hobbies included photography, astronomy, model railroading, family history, spending time with his grandchildren and watching Redskins football games.

Brian was preceded in death by his parents David and Paula Hansen. He is survived by his brother Mark and his wife Keni. He is also survived by his wife Linda and five children, Angela, and her husband Marty; Lori; Jason and his wife Meg; Carey; Timothy and his wife Kaitlyn; ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. His personality and sense of humor are already dearly missed and will be remember always by those who loved him.

Graveside interment will be at 9:00 AM Friday, September 1st at Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Military Honors will be conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard and the Iowa Military Funeral Honors Detail. Family, friends and old acquaintances are all welcome.
