Obituary

D. Pauline Shepp, 96, of Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, January 28, 2013 at Park Place Elder Living in Mt. Pleasant. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Sat., Feb. 2 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant. The Rev. Herbert G. Shafer, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 2-8 PM on Friday at the church where the family will receive friends from 5-7 PM. The Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main St., Mt. Pleasant, is assisting with the arrangements. Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to First United Methodist Church, Iowa Wesleyan College or the Midwest Old Threshers Foundation. Online condolences may be sent to www.kimzeyfuneralhome.com Mrs. Shepp, the former Dora Pauline Carroll, was born September 20, 1916 in Keosauqua, IA. She was the daughter of Herbert Bundy and Bessie Amelia (Dundore) Carroll. She received her grade school education in Pulaski and Bloomfield, IA. She attended Callahan Junior High in Des Moines, IA, while her father served as an n Iowa State Senator. She graduated from Keosauqua High School in 1934 and spent the first year out of high school helping her father in the news office where he was the owner and editor of the Keosauqua Republican. She graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant with a B.A. in English in 1939. During her college years, Pauline served as president of Hershey Hall, was a member of the Iowa Wesleyan Chorale, was Homecoming Queen and a Drake Relays Queen Candidate. Pauline's first teaching job was in Sperry, IA, where she taught freshman/sophomore English and junior/senior English and American Literature for 3 years. For the next 2 years, she served as a stenographer at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. She then interviewed at Iowa Wesleyan College and served as Assistant Dean of Women during WW II while teaching English, typing and business classes for 6 years. Mary years later, she returned to teaching at Helen Wiley's Humpty Dumpty Pre-School in Mt. Pleasant, a position she held for 12 years. Pauline met her husband, Robert Thompson Shepp, while they were both students at Iowa Wesleyan College. The married on July 8, 1943 at St. Paul's Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids, IA, while Cpl. Shepp was on leave from Aberdeen Proving Grounds, MD. He preceded her in death on January 20, 1999. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Grace Circle of the United Methodist Women. She also volunteered as a third grade Sunday School teacher and spent many hours working in the church foot tent during the annual Old Threshers Reunion. She joined the Pi Beta Phi sorority while a student at Iowa Wesleyan and was nationally recognized for her alumnae club service in 1993 as a 75 year member in 2011. She was also a member of the Henry County Health Center Auxiliary and volunteered at the HCHC information desk. She was a member of the PTA, served as a Girl Scout co-leader and as an officer of the Fortnightly Club. Reading books and playing bridge were among her favorite hobbies along with easting ice cream and chocolate. Survivors include one daughter, Melinda (Alan) Huisinga of Mt. Pleasant (formerly of Carlisle, IA); one granddaughter, Kristin (Adam) Sieren of West Des Moines, IA and with one great grandson, Lincoln Lennon Sieren, who was just born January 27, 2013. She was preceded in death by her husband and one grandson, Chad Michael Huisinga.
