E. Mary Goner, 89, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, August 13, 2013 at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral service for Mary Gonder will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, August 17, 2013 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The Reverend James Erwin, Pastor, Wellspring Evangelical Free Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. Friends may call from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM on Saturday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Gonder, the former Ethel Mary Forder, was born June 11, 1924 in Bolton County, Ontario, Canada. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Forder. Mary moved to Florida as a young child where she attended Wauchula (FL) Elementary School, She graduated from high school in Zephyllis, FL. Mary enrolled in the College of Business at Michigan State University in Lansing, MI, where she studied Social Studies and Accounting.
Mary began her working career as a purchasing clerk for Risdon Manufacturing Company, a Coca Cola franchise, in Naugatauk, CT. She remained there for 3 years. She then attended the National Academy of Nannies. She was nanny for a young boy from 1979-1981 and later for 2 other boys. Mary cared for the other end of the age spectrum at that time as well, as she looked after a 100 year old lady.
In 1995, Mary obtained her CNA License in Florida, with Special Skills training in the care of Alzheimer's, Kidney Dialysis, Stroke, Cancer, Senility and child care of all ages including newborn care on OB Wards. From 1987-1989, she worked for Nurses Unlimited. She then obtained her CAN License in North Carolina. Mary served as a home health aide for a lady in Greensboro, NC. She remained there until returning to Florida in December of 1991 to care for her aunt Lou Ann Austin. For 3 months in 1992, she moved to Vero Beach, FL as a CAN Companion for the Alsten Nursing Agency.
During her career as a care giver, she carried on a pen pal relationship with Ronald Gonder. In 1992, she moved to Iowa where she and Ron were united in marriage. They made their home in Ripley, IA until Ron's death in 1999. In 2000, Mary moved to make her home in Mt. Pleasant.
Survivors include her closest relative, second cousin Joanne Morrow and her husband John of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Also surviving is her care giver, Donna Fiedler of Mt. Pleasant.
Her husband and parents precede in death.
