James B. "Jim" Bishop, 74, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA.
A funeral service for Jim Bishop will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, January 25 at the First United Methodist Church, 309 North Main Street, Mt. Pleasant. The Reverend Deborah J. Stowers, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Committal services will be held at 1:00 PM on Monday, January 26 at the Evergreen Cemetery, Britt, Iowa. Friends may call after 12 Noon on Saturday, January 24 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 4-6 PM on Saturday. A public Masonic Service will be held at 6 PM Saturday, conducted by the Mt. Pleasant Lodge #8 AF & AM.

James Burton Bishop was born April 29, 1940 in Manchester, IA. He was the son of Frank Burton and Pearl Elizabeth (nee Rice) Bishop. He grew up on the family farm near Earlville, IA where he graduated from Earlville High School in 1958. He received his BA degree in Secondary Education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, and his MA degree in Guidance Counseling from Drake University in Des Moines. On August 9, 1964 at the Wesley Methodist Church, Wesley, IA, Jim was united in marriage to Gloria Jeanne Wise.
Jim began his teaching career at Anamosa High School, teaching English and History. He then taught at ASoutheast Polk High School. After receiving his Master's Degree, Jim became a Guidance Counselor at Southeast Polk High School. He later became an Administrator in Career Education of the Des Moines Area Community College in Ankeny. Jim then changed his career path and joined the Cargill Seed Company. In 1981, he moved to Mt. Pleasant and became an Area Field Manager for Cargill. Jim retired in 1996.
Mr. Bishop was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Mt. Pleasant and the Cum Deo Sunday School Class. He volunteered for many committees of the church, and served as a Sunday School teacher and youth leader. He was a member and Past Master of Mt. Pleasant Lodge #8 AF & AM. Jim was a member and Past President of the Mt. Pleasant Evening Rotary Club. He was involved in many projects of the club, and served several years as the Co-Chair of the Annual Rotary Barbeque. He was a Rotary Club Paul Harris Fellow.
Education and youth were a large part of Jim's life. In addition to his teaching duties, Jim was a basketball referee for the Iowa High School Athletic Association. In his retirement, Jim and Gloria wintered in Harlingen, TX, where they were volunteer tutors at the area elementary schools. He was a member of the Henry County Retired School Personnel.
Jim maintained a large miniature tractor collection. He enjoyed a bit of "gentleman farming" as he grew pumpkins. Jim liked to fish and golf. During winters in Harlingen, he and Gloria could often be found on the dance floor.
Those thankful for sharing in Jim's life include his wife of 50 years, Gloria of Mt. Pleasant; 2 children and their spouses - Karla & Kelly Mick of New Sharon, IA and Clark & Amy Bishop of Ankeny, IA; 6 grandchildren -Tyler, Allison, Brock, Gage, Mya and Cadence; one great granddaughter - Riley; a brother and his wife - David and Denise Bishop of Jesup, IA; a sister-in-law and her husband - Marie and Gerald Blumhagen of Castalia, IA and several nieces and nephews.
His parents, a son in infancy - Brent James Bishop and a brother, Herb Bishop, precede Jim in death.
