George Alvin
Chapman Jr.
Mar 11, 1934 — Oct 6, 2026
Mount Pleasant, Iowa=-[1
George Alvin Chapman Jr., 92, Mount Pleasant, IA, died unexpectedly Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Henry County Health Center, Mount Pleasant, Iowa.
George was born March 11, 1934, in West Lebanon, NH, the only child of George Alvin Sr. and Beatrice Leonie Thrasher Chapman. He married Karen Rosalee Oester on February 11, 1961. They shared 64 years together prior to her passing on February 21, 2025.
George graduated from Brown University, Providence, RI, in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army in Virginia and worked in the insurance field early in his career prior to venturing into business for himself when he and Karen purchased the Silverton Standard and Miner weekly newspaper in Silverton, Colorado in 1975. When that adventure finished, they purchased and ran the Diuguid House Bed and Breakfast in Murray, Kentucky, for a number of years. After another stint in Colorado, they moved to Mount Pleasant in 2010 to be closer to family.
Printing was a lifelong passion for George. He founded Bruin Press in 1953 while still in college, and he volunteered for many years at the Old Threshers Reunion Printer's Hall in Mount Pleasant, demonstrating the technique involved with running an old hand-fed Gordon letterpress. George was also involved with The Bulb Horn Magazine and with the Red Flag Tour, pursuing another passion of his, antique automobiles. He served as Grand Marshal of the Red Flag Tour in 2024.
George could be seen walking every morning in Mount Pleasant, an activity he took up as part of the Colorado Governor’s challenge while living there. At the time of his death, he had logged enough miles walking to more than circumnavigate the Earth.
George is survived by three children, Grant (Dianna) of Jefferson City, MO, Tod and Jill of Mount Pleasant. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Geordan Chapman of Itasca, IL, Emma Davis (Tyler) of Verona, WI and Dawn Yearington (Jake) of Westline, MO, and three great-grandchildren, with another expected.
Per his wishes he will be cremated. Interment will be in Silverton, CO at a later time.
The Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, is caring for George and his family. Online condolences may be directed to www.kimzeyfh.com
