The Reverend Gary E. Caldwell, 82, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at Arbor Court in Mt. Pleasant
The Requiem Holy Eucharist will be celebrated at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, May 6 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 202 East Washington Street, Mt. Pleasant. The Right Reverend Alan Scarfe, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa and the Reverend Carl D. Mann, Rector, St. Alban's Episcopal Church, Spirit Lake, IA, will concelebrate the Mass. Interment will occur at the columbarium of St. Michael's Church following the Mass with military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. There will be no visitation at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant, which is in charge of the arrangements. Online condolences may be directed to www.kimzeyfuneralhome.com. Gary Edward Caldwell was born May 4, 1931 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of Edward Paschal and Macil (nee Kinney) Caldwell. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1949. Gary enrolled at Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant where he was conferred with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and English in 1953. Following his college graduation, Gary was called to the service of his country. He entered the United States Army on July 17, 1953 from Ft. Des Moines, IA. He served as a Postal Clerk in the 28th Army Base Post Office in Germany. He was honorably discharged as a Private First Class on June 3, 1955 at Ft. Sheridan, IL. Gary remained as an Army Reservist for 8 years following his honorable discharge. Following his discharge, Gary worked as a Surveyor for Henry County. In 1957, Gary matriculated to the General Theological Seminary in New York City, where he received his Masters of Divinity degree in 1960. He then was ordained as a priest of the Episcopal Church at St. Michael's Church in Mt. Pleasant.
For many years, Gary was a missionary priest of the Episcopal Church in the West Indies. He returned to Mt. Pleasant after many years of service in the West Indies. He then operated the print shop at Iowa Wesleyan College. He also served as a supply priest for the dioceses of Iowa and Quincy, Illinois.
Gary was well known for his meticulous detail in his many eclectic interests. He spoke fluent German and Spanish. While in the Army in Germany, he translated the Book of Common Prayer into the Icelandic language. When there was no organist at the churches in Iowa and Illinois at which he was a supply priest, he would serve as the celebrant and the organist. He owned a vast collection of books and was a voracious reader, being able to understand several languages.
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Diane Caldwell of Mt. Pleasant; 2 nephews - Ed Caldwell and his wife Barb of Toledo, OH and Scott Caldwell of Plano, TX and 5 great nieces and nephews - Kirsten, Logan, Luke, Lauren and Weston Caldwell.
His parents and a brother, Alan Caldwell, precede Gary in death.
