Edward H. Lanferman III, 72, of Rome, IA, died early Saturday, January 05, 2013 at his residence.
A funeral service for Ed Lanferman will be held at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, January 9 at the Rome Baptist Church. Pastor Guy Sammons will officiate. Burial will be in the Grant Cemetery, rural Rome, with graveside military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM on Tuesday at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday evening.
Ed was born May 8, 1940 in Burlington, IA. He was the son of Edward Henry and Margaret Alice (Geiger) Lanferman, Jr. He was raised in Rome and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1958. He received some college education from Southeastern Community College. He married Marilyn Kramer. The couple later divorced. He then married Karen Gerth. The couple later divorced.
Mr. Lanferman worked for the O.E. McIntyre Plant in Mt. Plant in the Shipping and Receiving Department and was a Warehouse Group Leader. For over 25 years, Ed was employed as a construction technician for the Iowa Department of Transportation. He retired as a construction manager for the Iowa D.O.T. in 2009.
Shortly after high school, Ed entered the United States Army. He was inducted on February 25, 1959 at Ft. Des Moines, IA. He became a sharpshooter and was an Armor Intelligence Specialist in the 1st Battalion, 81st Armored Division stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. He was honorably discharged to the Army Reserves on April 12, 1962 at Ft. Hood. Ed continued his military service with the National Guard, Company D, 224th Engineer Battalion of Mt. Pleasant. He was honorably discharged from the National Guard on April 30, 1979.
Mr. Lanferman was a former council member and Mayor of Rome. He was a member of the Rome Baptist Church, H.O.G. (Harley Owners Group), ABATE and the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge of Mt. Pleasant. In his spare time, Ed enjoyed being in the outdoors with his activities.
Those thankful for sharing in Ed's life include a daughter, Katrina Bain and her friend Brandon Garrels, both of New London; a brother and his wife, John & Judy Lanferman of Rome and 7 grandchildren - Max & Anna Graf, Josie & Sully Bain and Caleb, Alisha and Ian Garrels.
His parents and a sister, Cindy Butler, precede Ed in death.
