Donald L. Hills, 84, of Winfield and formerly of Mt. Union and Columbus City, died Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield.
A graveside memorial funeral service will be held on Monday, SEPTEMBER 16, 2013 at the Columbus City Cemetery, Columbus City, where interment will take place. Mark Kimzey will officiate. A graveside military flag presentation will be conducted by Iowa Military Funeral Honors Detail. There will be no visitation at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant, which is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Donald Leroy Hills was born May 20, 1929 in Columbus City, IA. He was the son of Orville and Mildred Irene (nee VanAuken) Hills. He attended Columbus City Schools. On May 22, 1954 in Wapello, IA, Donald was united in marriage to Clara Evelyn Marie McDowell. Mrs. Hills died Saturday, April 24, 2010 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
Following his formal education, Don returned to work on the family farm. He remained there until he was called to serve his country during the Korean War. Don was inducted into the United States Army on April 6, 1951 at Ft. Des Moines. He became an infantryman assigned to Company F of the 23rd Infantry Regiment. He was honorable discharged as a Sergeant on February 5, 1953 at Camp Carson, Colorado.
Upon his return home, Donald worked as a farmhand. He then went to work for the Mt. Union Co-op. In 1983, Don accepted a position as a custodian for the Winfield-Mt. Union School District. He remained there until his retirement in 1993.
Don served as a Councilman on the Mt. Union City Council. With his wife, he was active in the Winfield-Mt. Union Booster Club. In his spare time, Don enjoyed woodworking. He refinished and restored furniture, often having to construct exact replicas of broken furniture pieces. He also built some pieces from the ground up. Don and his wife owned a cabin on Lake Rathbun, where Don loved to go fishing for crappies.
Those privileged for sharing in Don's life include 3 children and their spouses: Carla & Mike Morrow of Mount Pleasant, Becky & Tim Smith of Ft. Garland, Colorado and Jon & Tess Hills of Mt. Union; 1 sister, Deloris Hamilton of Fredonia, IA; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
His parents, wife, 1 daughter - Cherie Hills and 1 sister, Eva Griffin, precede Don in death.
