Donald E. "Charlie" Smith, 67, of rural Salem, Iowa, died Friday, April 22, 2016 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.
A memorial sharing of memories will be held at a later date in Kentucky. There will be no local visitation or service. The Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Donald Eugene "Charlie" Smith was born December 5, 1948 in Union town, Kentucky. He was the son of James and Corrine (Wicks) Smith. He was raised in Kentucky where he attended school. On March 16, 1984 in Waukegan, Illinois, Donald was united in marriage to Maria Luisa Cortez.
Mrs. Smith was a machine adjustor in the envelope manufacturing field. He worked for envelope production companies in Waukegan, IL, Houston TX and Shelbyville, KY. In 1993, Donald accepted a position with Mackay Envelope in Mt. Pleasant. He retired from Mackay in 2004.
"Charlie" loved to go fishing, often fishing in the ponds of his friends. He also enjoyed bow hunting for deer.
Those thankful for sharing in Donald's life include his wife Maria of rural Salem; a son, David Kenneth Smith of Kentucky; a daughter, Kerri Smith of North Carolina; 3 step sons, Frankie Diaz of Texas, Roy Diaz of Arkansas and Luis Diaz of Salem, Iowa; 1 step daughter, Jose Diaz of Texas; 2 brothers, Charles David Smith of Nevada and James Smith of California; 3 sisters, Patsy Smith Garrett of Kentucky, Jeannie Smith of South Carolina and Sue Clark of South Carolina; 5 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
His parents and 1 brother, Buddy Smith, precede Donald in death.
