Obituary

Charles D. Brombaugh, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, December 29, 2012 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant. A joint memorial service for Charles and his wife Mary will be held at a later date. Burial will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery. The Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to kimzeyfuneralhome.com. Charles D. Brombaugh was born July 19, 1924 in Keokuk, IA. He was the son of Fred Bryant and Lillian Olena (Huff) Brombaugh. He graduated from Bonaparte High School in 1941. Shortly after graduation, Charles entered the United States Navy. He entered service on August 5, 1941 at the USNTC, Great Lakes, Illinois. He served as a Ship's Cook First Class on the USS Cecil J. Doyle, USS Gen. RM Blotchford, USS P.C. 603 and the USS Mindoro. He was honorably discharged on June 28, 1947 at the US Navy Receiving Center, Boston, MA with the following commendations: the Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, the American Area Medal, the American Defense Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal and the European-African-Middle East Meda.. He returned to Iowa when, on May 2, 1948 in Milton, IA, Charles was united in marriage to Mary Louis Wilson. Mrs. Brombaugh died Monday, July 16, 2012 at Park Place in Mt. Pleasant. Charles moved to the Mt. Pleasant area in 1955 to work for the Cargill Seed Company. He then began a long career in farming around the Mt. Pleasant area. In 1977, Charles became a truck driver for the Garrels Elevator. Following Mr. Garrels death, Charles became a driver for the Hunsaker Trucking Company. A highly respected trucker, he was frequently requested by the company's customers. He retired in 2007. Mr. Brombaugh was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he had served on the Session of the church. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2561 of Mt. Pleasant and was a 50 year member of Celestial Lodge #413 AF & AM of Douds. He loved fishing and was known as a voracious reader. Those thankful for sharing in Charles life include 4 daughters - Nancy Gruwell of Phoenix, AZ, Sandra Renberg of Anthem, AZ, Carol Brombaugh of Antioch, CA and Janet Brombaugh of Phoenix, AZ; a brother and his wife, Robert and Jean Brombaugh of Mt. Pleasant; 6 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. His parents, wife and a brother in infancy, Richard Brombaugh, precede Charles in death.
