Carl B. Moehlman, Jr., 86, of Mt. Pleasant, died Friday, February 6, 2026 at his home in Mt. Pleasant.
Carl was born May 23, 1939 in Bryan, Texas, the son of Carl B. and Margaret June (Fairman) Moehlman. He graduated from Bryan High School in 1957. He received the Bachelor of Music degree from North Texas State University in 1961.
Carl taught piano lessons and classroom music in Dallas, Texas for two years while obtaining his Master of Music degree from North Texas State Teachers University (now the University of North Texas).
On August 22, 1964, Carl was united in marriage to Dorothy “Dottie” Eleanor Crim at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Bryan. Shortly after their marriage, the couple made their home in Mt. Pleasant, IA, as Carl accepted a position in the Music Department of Iowa Wesleyan College where he taught music theory, organ, and class piano until his retirement in 2005. Dorothy taught elementary music in Dallas, Texas, and at Clark Elementary School in New London.
Carl remained deeply active in music after retirement, continuing as the Iowa Wesleyan College organist. He served as a member of the Mt. Pleasant Chorale, worked as an organist and choir director at Christ Episcopal church in Burlington, and served previously many years as organist and choir director at the United Methodist church in Mt. Pleasant. Carl performed organ recitals across Iowa, Texas and Oklahoma. He was an active member of the Burlington organist network, American Organist Guild and the Henry County retired school personnel association. He also served on the board of the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra.
Following the passing of his wife Dottie, Carl established the Dorothy Moehlman Memorial, which became a major supporter of the KidSymphony. Through this memorial, the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra was able to bring classical music to children across multiple cities in southeast Iowa, expanding access to music education throughout the region.
Carl was known for his generosity and dry wit. Carl was a devoted husband and cared for his wife, Dorothy for many years through the various health problems she struggled with. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, cooking, and researching genealogy. He had a big personality and an infectious laugh. Family and friends meant the world to Carl. He enjoyed a glass of red wine with his best friend, Joel Brown almost every evening for many years. He was a great husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. We will all miss him very much.
Those thankful for sharing in Carl’s life include two sons – Michael Moehlman of Mt. Pleasant and David Moehlman and his wife, Jean, of Nogales, AZ; Michael's former wife, Connie Moehlman, of Des Moines; three grandchildren – Sarah Vande Voort and her husband. Kendall, of Evansdale, IA, Stephen Moehlman of Des Moines, IA and Linnea Moehlman of Nogales, AZ; brother, John Moehlman and his wife, Sandi, of Austin, TX; nieces and nephews. His parents and wife Dorothy preceded Carl in death.
