Buena J. "Boo" Messer, 81, of Mt. Pleasant, died Saturday, November 24, 2012 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, IA; A memorial funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM on Monday, November 26 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 607 South Jackson Street, Mount Pleasant. Father Ed Fitzpatrick and Fr. Joseph Phung will concelebrate the mass. A light luncheon will follow the mass. A private family burial will be held at a later date in the Forest Home Cemetery, Mt. Pleasant. A Christian Wake Service will be held at 4:00 PM Sunday, Nov. 25 at St. Alphonsus Church, after which, the family will receive friends until 6:00 PM. The Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Main Street, Mount Pleasant, is assisting the family with the arrangements. Mrs. Messer, the former Buena Jean Brooks, was born December 15, 1930 in Arlington Iowa. She was the daughter of Nelson LaVerne and Lila Pearl (Crofoot) Brooks. She moved with her family to Mt. Pleasant at a young age. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1951. On April 12, 1947 in Burlington, Iowa, Buena was united in marriage to Earl Sherman Messer. Mr. Messer died on Sunday, September 6, 1998 at their residence in Mt. Pleasant. Buena worked at Emerson Electric and Motorola in Mt. Pleasant. From 1972 until 1992, she worked at the Sears Catalog Store in Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Messer was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the Altar & Rosary Society and the Ladies For Charity. She enjoyed quilting, traveling, spending time with friends, family and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. All who knew her have experienced her unique quick wit and humor. She will be missed dearly. Those thankful for sharing in Buena's life include her 4 sons - Steven Earl Messer and his wife, Mary Ann, David Jeffrey Messer and his wife Val and Kent Lee Messer, all of Mt. Pleasant, and Keith Duane Messer of Burlington; 5 sisters - Beatrice M. Dannan of Linn Creek, MO, Addie S. Simmons of Altoona, IA, Evelyn Duffy and Erma Glanzman, both of Pittsburg, CA and Polly Aaron of Rogers, AR; 5 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Her parents, husband and 2 brothers - Earl and Everett Brooks precede Buena in death. Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to a charity of the donor's choice in Buena's memory.
