Barbara Ellen
Raymond
July 12, 1939 – April 14, 2026
Barbara Ellen (Baker) Raymond passed away peacefully on April 14, 2026, in Gig Harbor, WA at the age of 86.
Born at home on July 12, 1939, in rural Van Buren County, IA, Barbara was the eldest of five daughters born to Albert E. and Keo M. (Wilburn) Baker. She attended country school, graduated from Fairfield High School in 1957 and later earned a degree in Elementary Education (Summa cum Laude) from the former Parsons College in Fairfield in 1972.
Barbara is survived by her three children, Gary (Julie) Raymond of Marion, IA, Julie Raymond (William) Neff of Polk City, IA, and Janae Raymond (Jeremiah) Noneman of Gig Harbor, WA, along with seven grandchildren (Tyler, Haley, Emily, Eric, Jordan, Hudson, Bryce), and three great grandchildren (Lila, Roman, Sophie). She is also survived by one sister, Christine Fayard of Montgomery, TX, and many nieces and nephews.
Barbara was preceded in death by her son, Jerry L. Raymond, her parents, Albert and Keo, and three sisters, Kathryn Shoemaker, Susan Way, and Bonnie Baker.
Barbara taught first grade and special education students for many years in the Pekin Community School District, teaching hundreds of children to read and write. She had a special fondness for children with learning disabilities and helped many students develop a lifelong love of books and learning. Barbara was a talented seamstress and quilt maker. She was a lifelong gardener and enjoyed tending to her many flower beds and growing vegetables to share with her family. Barbara will be remembered for her divinity candy at Christmas, her love of black raspberry pie, and the many pans of homemade oatmeal rolls she baked for her family. Barbara played a special role as Grandma and caretaker to her grandchildren, Jordan, Hudson, and Bryce, living near them in Gig Harbor and helping to raise, nurture, and love them.
A private graveside service was held on April 25, 2026, at the Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield with The Rev. Tyler Raymond officiating.
Memorials can be made to the Fairfield Public Library Foundation.
