Salvador "Sal" Alaniz, Sr., 89, of Mt. Pleasant, IA and formerly of Chicago, Il, died Sunday, October 4, 2015 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral mass for Sal Alaniz, Sr. will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Friday, October 9, 2015 at Saint Alphonsus Catholic Church, 607 South Jackson Street, Mount Pleasant. Father Joseph Phung will celebrate the mass. Friends may call after 2PM on Thursday at the church. The Knights of Columbus Father John Manning Council will recite the rosary at 6:30 PM. The family will greet friends following the rosary. Further visitation will be held from 3-9 PM on Sunday, Oct. 11 at the Hursen Funeral Home, 4001 West Roosevelt Road, Hillside, Illinois. The Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Sunday evening. A private family burial will be on Monday at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside.

Salvador F. "Sal" Alaniz was born February 24, 1926 in Chicago, IL. He was the son of Matias and Josephine (nee Palacio) Alaniz. He graduated from Crane Tech High School in Chicago. Sal was called to serve his country during WW II. He entered the US Navy on May 4, 1944 at Great Lakes, IL. Sal served as a Radioman 3rd Class on the USS Appalachian and the USS Harry Lee. He was honorable discharged on Jun 1, 1946 at Great Lakes. Following his honorable discharge, Sal was united in marriage on August 21, 1948 at St. Francis Catholic Church in Chicago to Thomasa Rita (nee Orozco) Alaniz.
Sal worked briefly at International Harvester and as a bookkeeper for Hartland Austin Linen Company in Chicago. Sal worked for several printing companies in Chicago before a benefactor and friend by the name of Peter McQuillen took Sal in and offered him space to begin his own printing company. He formed the Alan Printing Company which he operated in several different locations in Chicago. He sold the company and, in 1975, moved to Mt. Pleasant where he was offered a position with the former Metromail Corporation. In 1978, Sal left Metromail and formed the Alaniz & Sons, Inc. in Mt. Pleasant. He later added an additional printing location in Hays, Kansas. He sold the company to Joseph Alaniz and moved back to Chicago in 1993. He returned to Mt. Pleasant in 2005. Because of his entrepreneurship in the printing industry, Sal's company was named one of the top 100 Hispanic Business in the United States. Sal was received at the White House Rose Garden in a ceremony to receive his award.
Throughout his life, Sal maintained a deep love for the game of soccer. He was a player on the Atlanta Soccer Team and the Atlas Soccer Team, both out of Chicago. For many years, Sal was the Secretary of the Chicago Soccer League.
Sal was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus Father John Manning Council, both of Mt. Pleasant. He participated in several Youth Retreats and Adult Marriage Retreats with the church. He was a former member of St. Domatilla Catholic Church in Hillside, IL. Sal was a 55-year member of AA. He helped start the first Hispanic AA group in Chicago.
Those thankful for sharing in Sal's life include his wife of 67 years, Thomasa "Tiny" Alaniz of Mt. Pleasant. 5 children - Salvador F. Alaniz, Jr. and his wife Rosalee of Mt. Pleasant, Joseph Alaniz of Colorado Springs, CO, Richard Alaniz and his wife Elizabeth of Bainbridge Island, Washington, Theresa Morgan and her husband Michael of Marion, IA and Michael Alaniz and his wife Julie of Wellington, FL; 2 sisters-in-law - Maria Elena Alaniz of Mexico and Kathy Alaniz of Chicago; 1 brother-in-law, Robert Stone of Clearwater, Florida; 19 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
His parents, 2 brothers - Frank and Raul Alaniz and a sister, Angie Stone, precede Sal in death.
