Mrs. Tolander, the former Marilyn Joyce Wolin, was born February 6, 1934, in Mt. Pleasant. She was the daughter of Ralph Gilbert and Orpha Suzanne (Johnson) Wolin. She grew up on a farm north of town and went to elementary school at Prairie Gem School. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1952. On May 29, 1954, in the chapel of the First Methodist Church in Mt. Pleasant, Marilyn was united in marriage to Richard A. Tolander by the Reverend Dr. James Marlin.
Marilyn was a former member of the Olds Congregational United Church of Christ, where she was actively involved with teaching Sunday school and a member of the Choir. She was a Cub Scout leader while their children were younger. Richard and Marilyn later moved to Mt. Pleasant. Marilyn worked at Harrison's Dime Store, Ellie's Country Store and the Henry County Credit Union, from which she retired. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and sang in the Chancel Choir for many years. Marilyn loved to cook and bake all types of desserts for her family and church events as well as for others. She enjoyed singing in the choir, playing cards, reading and visiting with family and friends and many weekend days traveling through the country side.

Pleasant; 3 sons - David (Annette) of Waterloo, IA; Duane (Diane) of Ankeny, IA and Ralph (friend Deb Solomon) of Sugar Land, TX; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (Grant) Zielinski, Kristina (Trent) Wellman, Abbey (Chad) Maxwell, Adam (Veronica) Tolander, Austin (Anna) Tolander, Preston Tolander and Jarred Tolander; one step grandson, Nick (Melissa) Strauss, 8 great grandchildren, 2 step great grandchildren and one unborn great grandson due in January 2017; a sister - Janet Wolin of Mt.
