Lena M. Hallowell, 92, of Mt. Pleasant, died Tuesday, March 22, 2016 at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral service for Mrs. Hallowell will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, March 26 at the Calvary Baptist Church, 803 East Mapleleaf Drive, Mt. Pleasant. The Reverend Michael Hess, Senior Pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem East Cemetery, Salem, IA. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM on Friday at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5:30 - 7:30 PM on Friday evening.

Mrs. Hallowell, the former Lean Mae Pickard, was born October 29, 1923 on the family farm, Jackson Township, rural Mt. Pleasant, IA. She was the daughter of James Owns and Gladys Bird (Jackson) Pickard. Lena graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1941. On July 11, 1941 at her parents' home, Lena was united in marriage to Wayne Dale Hallowell. Mr. Hallowell died June 12, 1987 in Iowa City.
Mrs. Hallowell was a sales clerk for Hoaglin's Dept. Store and the P.N. Hirsch Store in Mt. Pleasant. For 20 years, Lena was a sales clerk for Spurgeon's Dept. Store in Mt. Pleasant, from which she retired.
Lena attended Calvary Baptist Church in Mt. Pleasant. She was an avid reader and loved to solve word search puzzles. Crocheting was a favorite pastime. Among other items, she crafted over 300 afghans with her crocheting, giving away many for missionary work. Lena also had an extensive collection of thimbles, both functional and for display.
Those thankful for sharing in Lena's life include 4 children - Mrs. Janet Lindstrom of Donahue, IA, Dana Hocker and her husband Brian Scott of Brookport, IL, Gail Hallowell of New London and Leo Hallowell of Burlington; 2 sisters - Mrs. Ethel Ranck of New London and Roberta Fraise and her husband Harold of Danville; 9 grandchildren - Joleen, Gary, Shawn, Rachel, Rebecca, Adam, Shane, Angel & Lisa; 14 great grandchildren - Laura, James, Gillian, Nicole, Megan, Katelyn, Mykala, Matthew, Catherine, Emily, Brenna, Loren, Jessica & Janice, and 3 great great grandchildren - Wynter, Cambre & Isabelle;
Her parents, husband, an infant son - Gary Lee Hallowell, an infant grandson, Jason Hallowell, 2 sons-in-law - Richard Lindstrom and Kenneth O'Key, 1 daughter-in-law - Florence Hallowell, 4 brothers - Milton, Dale, Cecil & George Dewayne Pickard and 2 sisters - Selma Kennedy & Wilma Marsching precede Lena in death.
