Joey Lee Hamm, 35 of Rome, IA and formerly of Oakville, IA and Thompson, IL, died after a brief struggle with cancer on Friday, September 20, 2013 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, IA .
A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the Solid Rock Baptist Church, Wapello. Pastor Dan Doolin will officiate. Memorials may be directed to the family. Joey Lee Hamm was born August 18, 1938 in Burlington, IA. He was the son of Floyd Lee and Vickey Lee (nee Robertson) Hamm. He was raised in Thompson, IL where he attended school.
On October 12, 2011 in a "Costume Theme Wedding" at the Jefferson County park in Fairfield, Joey was united in marriage to Mindy Rea Bartels.
Joey lived in Oakville, IA with his family following the death of his father. While in Oakville, Joey worked as an installer of field tile. He has been a resident of Rome for the past 9 years. For the past 8 years, he has been employed at Veyance Technologies in Mt. Pleasant.
Joey was a Chicago Bears fan. He followed Dale Earnhardt, Jr. in NASCAR. Joey was fond of survivor shows and Duck Dynasty on television. He enjoyed the outdoors as he hunted and fished for catfish on the Iowa, Skunk and Mississippi rivers.
Those thankful for sharing in Joey's life include his wife Mindy of Rome; a son, Austin Hunter Hamm at home in Rome; his mother, Vickey Lee Hamm of Mt. Pleasant; 3 sisters - Tena Smith of Kentucky, April Hamm and Laura Hand and her husband John of Morning Sun, IA; his mother-in-law, Tammy Swenka of Belmond, IA; his father in law, Roger Bartels of Anchorage, AK; a grandmother-in-law, Nancy Wendel of Oelwein, IA and several nieces and nephews.
His father and grandparents precede Joey in death.
