James Vancil Obituary

James R. "Jim" Vancil, 68, of Salem, IA, died Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at his residence.
A funeral service for Jim Vancil will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 20 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. Chaplain Jim Luder of HCI Care Services will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem East Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. Friends may call from 1 PM - 8 PM on Sunday, April 19 at the Kimzey Funeral Home. The family will be present to receive friends from 4-6 PM Sunday afternoon.

James Robert "Jim Vancil was born June 28, 1946 in Smithshire, Illinois. He was the son of Ellis Lavern "Bud and Margaret Juanita (nee Rosenbalm) Vancil. He attended school in Stronghurst, IL. On December 10, 1980 in Iowa City, IA, Jim was united in marriage to Carmen Eileen Dalrymple.
After his formal schooling and prior to his career employment, Jim was a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army. He entered his country's service on May 11, 1971 at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He was a General Vehicle Repairman and Truck Mechanic for the US Army Retraining Brigade. He served in Vietnam and received the following commendations: The National Defense Service Medal, the republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, 1st & 2nd Awards of the Good Conduct Medal, the Vietnam Service Medan. The Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. During his Army career he also received his GED degree. His was honorably discharged on September 24, 1975 at Ft. Riley, Kansas.
When Jim returned stateside, he became a mechanic for first the Junkins Garage in Montrose, IA, and the American Motors Dealership in Ft. Madison. For a brief period, he worked in the construction trade with his brother in the Chicago area. He returned to southeast Iowa where he became a machine mechanic at the Breck's Shampoo Company in Ft. Madison, and later at Anchor Metals. For 16 years, he was a machine mechanic for the former Metromail Corporation in Mt. Pleasant. He then carried a similar position for 10 years with Lomont Fabrication and Molding in Mt. Pleasant, from which he retired. In his spare time, Jim enjoyed camping, hunt and fishing. He was also quite crafty with a pool cue in his hand. He played on a pool league team sponsored by Rumors bar in Mt. Pleasant.
Those thankful for sharing in Jim's life include his wife Carmen of Salem; 2 sons - James Vancil, Jr. and his wife Terri of Farmington, IA and Shane Vancil of Salem, IA; 3 daughters, Melissa Hopp and her husband Doug of Argyle, IA, Lori Kempker and her husband Damon of Ft. Madison and Tasha Vancil of Mt. Pleasant; 3 brothers - Ellis Vancil, Jr. of Dixon, IL, David Vancil & his wife Margaret of Stronghurst, IL and Jeff Vancil of Stronghurst; 2 sisters, Grace Ochsner of Reynolds, IL and Chris Cook and her husband Paul of Stronghurst; his mother and father-in-law, Howard & Mary Dalrymple of Ft. Madison; 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
His parents and a sister, Linda Effland precede Jim in death.
