Barbara Kimzey Obituary

Barbara J. Kimzey, 81, of Indianola, IA and formerly of New Virginia, IA, died unexpectedly late Thursday afternoon, June 12, 2014 at her residence.
A funeral service for Barbara Kimzey will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 17 at the New Virginia United Methodist Church. The Reverend Keith Putney will officiate. Burial will be in the New Virginia Cemetery. Friends may call from 5-8 PM on Monday at the Overton Funeral Home, 501 West Ashland Street in Indianola.

Mrs. Kimzey, the former Barbara Jean Hilton, was born May 27, 1933 in Indianola. She was the daughter of Paul Francis and Martha Lucille (nee Nine) Hilton. She moved as a young child with her family to New Virginia. She graduated from New Virginia Consolidated High School in 1951. On November 3, 1951 at the (then) Ft. Des Moines Methodist Church, Barbara was united in marriage to Albert Henry "Jake" Kimzey. Mr. Kimzey died Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at the Hospice of Central Iowa Kavanagh House on 56th Street in Des Moines.
Barbara started her married life in Des Moines working for Blue Line Moving and Storage. The couple soon relocated to New Virginia. Barbara took a position as secretary to C.O. Lundby at the New Virginia High School. She left that position to raise her family. After the birth of her children, she returned to the Interstate 35 Community School District as a nurse's aide. In the late 1960's, Barb became the teacher's aide at the New Virginia Elementary/Jr. High center of Interstate 35. She remained there until the mid-1980, when she left and became the secretary for the New Virginia/Medora United Methodist Church Parish. She retired in the early 1990's.
For decades, Barb and Jake owned and operated Barb's Antiques in New Virginia. They were often fixtures at an untold number of auctions in central Iowa. They operated booths at numerous antique shows and flea markets. For a number of years, they had permanent booths at antique malls in Walnut, IA and Des Moines.
Since 1952, Barbara had been a member of the New Virginia United Methodist Church. She was active in many of the church functions, and often served as the worship leader for Sunday services. She was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Order of the Eastern Star Chapters, both in New Virginia. Barb enjoyed traveling, as she went on trips to places near and far with friends and family. She was dedicated to all the member of her family, and saw that they always gathered together for something to eat. Her dedication enveloped the love she held for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, attending many of their school and sport functions.
Those thankful for sharing in Barb's life include her 3 children - Tala Lehmer of Clive, IA, Renee Kimzey of Indianola and Mark Kimzey and his wife Linda of Mt. Pleasant; 6 grandchildren - Shenna Lehmer of Clive, Dusti Sanchez of Indianola, Rebekah & Aaron Kimzey of Mt. Pleasant, Tom Shelton of Huxley, IA and Joe Shelton of Ankeny; 3 great grandchildren - Natalia, Catalina and Adan Sanchez of Indianola; 1 sister - Billie Lou Davidson of Indianola; 1 brother Steven Hilton and his wife Christine of Indianola; 1 sister in law - Sandra Hilton of Osceola; 1 brother in law - Jerry Kimzey and his wife Norma of Phoenix, AZ and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
Barbara is preceded in death by her parents, husband, 1 brother - Jerry Hilton and 1 granddaughter - Cassia Lehmer.
