Ardis Harnagel Obituary

Ardis K. Harnagel, 71, of Mt. Pleasant, died Wednesday, March 30, 2016 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral service for Ardis Harnagel will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday, April 2 at the Wayland Mennonite Church, Wayland, IA. Pastors Michael Swartzendruber and Kelly Slagel will officiate. Burial will be in North Hill Cemetery, rural Wayland. Friends may call from 5-7 PM on Friday at the church where the family will be present. The Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant, is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Mrs. Harnagel, the former Ardis Kay Vermazen, was born September 8, 1944 in Belle Plaine, IA. She was the daughter of Ralph James and Amber Bertha (Brush) Vermazen. At an early age, she moved with her family to Arizona, where she graduated from Phoenix West High School. She returned to Iowa and attended the University of Iowa. She was conferred with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education, specializing in History Education. She received her Masters of Science Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of Iowa. On July 20, 1968 at the Norwood Park Presbyterian Church in Chicago, IL, Ardis was united in marriage to John Andrew Harnagel.
Mrs. Harnagel taught high school History for a couple of years before pursuing her Master's Degree. For 23 years, she was the Director of Guidance at Round Lake High School in Round Lake, IL, completing a total of 38 years in the educational field. Ardis was very dedicated in the guidance field and was well loved by her students. She retired in 2005 and moved to Mt. Pleasant in 2006 to be near family.
Ardis was a member of the Wayland Mennonite Church. During her years in education, she served as the President of the Illinois Vocational Association. She was also a lobbyist for the National Vocational Association, spending ample time pursuing the group's causes in Washington D.C. She was also a member of WINGS, a Women-in-Government group. After her retirement, she became the Treasurer of the Henry County Health Center Auxiliary.
Those thankful for sharing in Ardis' life include her husband of 47 years, John of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter and her husband, Rachel & Jay Meyer of Wayland; a sister and her husband, Janis & Sonny Strunk of Glendale, AZ; a brother and his spouse, Dr. Bruce Vermazen & Juan Miguel of San Diego, CA, and 2 grandsons - Joel and Samuel Meyer.
Her parents precede Ardis in death.
