Vera L. Scheer, 91, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of Salem, IA, died Monday, May 18, 2015 at the Henry County Health Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A private family graveside funeral service will be held at a later date at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Cantril, IA. Pastor Jared Haley of the Salem Friends Church will officiate. Graveside Military Honors will be provided by the Henry County Honor Guard. There will be no visitation at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant, which is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Mrs. Scheer, the former Vera Lucille Sprouse, was born June 24, 1924 in North Platte, Nebraska. She was the daughter of Selby Clyde and Florence Reva (nee Keck) Sprouse. She moved with her family to Iowa at an early age. She graduated from Bonaparte High School in 1940 and later attended the former Burlington Business School. In 1941, Vera married Frank "Bud" Shaw. The couple later divorced. On September 1, 1993 in Reno, NV, Vera was united in marriage to Vernon George Scheer. The couple made their home in Salem, IA. Mr. Scheer died Friday, June 14, 1996 at their residence in Salem.
Vera was a World War II veteran of the US Army Air Corps and a member of the Women's Army Corps Service (WACS). She later reenlisted in the US Air Force and was stationed at the Strategic Air Command (SAC) Headquarters, Offutt Air Force Base, Nebraska. After a short tour of duty, she worked in the Federal Civil Service for the Air Force in Guam, the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO and the Veterans Administration in Florida. She concluded her working career with Social Security Administration in Iowa, Colorado and Florida. She retired in 1996.
Vera was a member of the American Legion Post #94 of Salem and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She was an avid reader and book collector.
Those thankful for sharing in Vera's life include a brother, Clyde Sprouse of Keosauqua, IA; a sister and her husband, Grace and Harold Mills of Salem, IA; numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews and her dear friend of many years, Carolyn Davis of Sang Run, Maryland.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister, Carolyn McLeland Bolin.
