Marlene C. Garretson, 59, of Salem, IA, died Saturday, February 8, 2014 at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A funeral mass for Marlene will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Tue., Feb. 11 at St. John's Catholic Church in Houghton. The Reverend Bruce DeRammelaere will celebrate the mass. Burial will be in the Salem East Cemetery. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 8:00 PM on Monday, Feb. 10 at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The Rosary will be recited at 5:30 PM. The family will be present to receive friends following the rosary until 7:00 PM Monday.

Marlene Conrad Garretson was born August 29, 1954. She was the daughter of Willis and Anna Lee (nee Rauenbuehler) Conrad. On June 28, 1975 in West Point, IA, Marlene was united in marriage to Joel H. Garretson.
She graduated from Marquette High School in West Point, IA and received an AA degree at Kirkwood College in Cedar Rapids, IA. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, IA and McHenry Community College in McHenry, IL. Marlene graduated with an AA degree in Graphic Design from Elgin Community College in Elgin, IL, and received a BA in English from Columbia College, Columbia MO. She was employed by several dental offices in southeast Iowa and West Virginia and the University of Iowa. While residing in Illinois, she was employed by Knaack Mfg in Crystal Lake, IL and Liberty Suburban Press in Huntley, IL as a graphic designer.
She enjoyed gardening, interior and exterior design, quilting, creating artwork for a series of children's book with her sister Lois, working on the farm, playing with her grandchildren, and visiting with family and friends. She had a major role in the fund raising and interior/exterior planning and design of the new Salem Crew Library and later served as a board member of the Friends of the Library. She designed and built her craftsman style home and was active in restoring the old Garretson house on the farm. She was a member of the St. Johns Catholic Church in Houghton, IA.
Survivors include her husband Joel of rural Salem, IA; two sons, Justin of Johnston, IA and Kurt of rural Salem; two granddaughters Jeneva and Isabelle of Johnston, IA; her mother Anna Lee Conrad of West Point; sisters Lois (Denny) Obert of Louisville, KY; Leah (Ben) Link of West Point, IA; Ann (Pat) Bira of Troy, MO; Carol Bob) Welding of Quincy, IL; Gina (Darrell) Obert of Quincy, IL; and brothers Steve (Sue) Conrad of West Point, IA and Greg (Shari) Conrad of Springfield, IL.
She was preceded in death by her father Willis Conrad and two sisters, Mary and Victoria.
