Lewis L. Howard, 93, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, formerly of Cedar Rapids, IA and Ft. Madison, IA, died Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at his residence.
A memorial funeral service for Mr. Howard will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at St. Michael's Episcopal Church, 202 East Washington Street, Mt. Pleasant. Pastor Shirley Spray of the Community of Christ Church of Mt. Pleasant will officiate. Burial will be in the Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Ft. Madison, IA. There will be no visitation at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mt. Pleasant, which is assisting the family with the arrangements.

Lewis was born May 26, 1921 in Shenandoah, IA. He was the son of Arthur and Rhoda (Speer) Howard. He graduated from Shenandoah High School. He was conferred with a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy from Iowa State University. On January 5, 1947, Lewis was united in marriage to Shirley Iona Sanford, who preceded in death.
Following his education, Lewis pursued his love of aviation. He served in the US Air Force as a liaison pilot for the 34th Division Field Artillery during World War II. Following the completion of his military service, he continued to pursue flying as a career. He brought aviation to Ft. Madison where he founded Ft. Madison Flying Service. He build an airfield there which is still in service today. Throughout the years, he also worked in farm management, farm loans and the insurance industry.
Lewis was an active member of the Community of Christ Church where he served in a number of capacities. He was instrumental in the purchase and development of the church campgrounds near Mechanicsville, IA.
Those thankful for sharing in Lewis' life include his daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Dale Marzolf of Mt. Pleasant; a granddaughter and her husband, Kate and Brandon Ridinger of Mt. Pleasant, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Betty and Elbert Tripp of West Point, IA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents, wife, four sisters and a sister-in-law precede Lewis in death.
