Gary Sammons Obituary

Gary W. Sammons, 62, of Mt. Pleasant, died unexpectedly on early Saturday, August 15, 2015 in the Emergency Room of the Lake Regional Health Systems, Osage Beach, MO, while vacationing with his family in the Lake of the Ozarks.
A funeral mass for Gary will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Wednesday, August 19 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, 607 South Jackson Street, Mt. Pleasant. Father Bruce DeRammelaere will celebrate the mass with Father Nicholas J. Adam as concelebrant. Burial will be in the St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 12 Noon to 9:00 PM on Tuesday, August 18 at the church. The family will be present to receive friends from 4:30-7:30 PM. There will be a Scriptural Wake Service at 7:30 PM

Gary William Sammons was born April 13, 1953 in Mt. Pleasant. He was the son of William Patrick and Jean Lawanna (Johnson) Sammons. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1971 where he was a Captain on the football team and an All State guard. He was also active in wrestling and track in high school. He furthered his education by attending college at Indian Hills Community College and Southeastern Community College. On April 21, 1979 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant, Gary was united in marriage to Judith Ann "Judy" Scott.
Gary worked briefly for the Putney Electric Company and the Iowa DOT. Gary was offered two weeks of work at Mt. Pleasant Electric Contractors, which turned into a career of 42 years as an electrician for Mt. Pleasant Electric. Although still working for Mt. Pleasant Electric, Gary had been a Funeral Associate for the Kimzey Funeral Home, working primarily funerals on the weekends.
Gary was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. He served as a Eucharistic Minister, an Usher and served on the Building and Ground Committee. He was an Officer for the Mt. Pleasant Athletic Booster Club. For some 30 years, Gary filmed the home football games of Mt. Pleasant High. He enjoyed many activities outdoors, most especially biking camping and canoeing. He chaperoned a local Boy Scout Troop to Philmont. He had been a member of the local bike club and bowled for the Mt. Pleasant Electric Bowling Team. Gary was a devoted Iowa Hawkeye fan, and held season tickets for the football, basketball and wrestling events. Gary was a very avid meat smoker who enjoyed barbecuing. He hosted numerous tailgate events at Iowa home football games and backyard parties at their away games.
Those thankful for sharing in Gary's life include his wife, Judy of Mt. Pleasant; 2 children - Julie Jedlicka and her husband Chad of Springdale, IA and Scott Sammons and his fiancée Rebecca Kunde of Ely, IA; 1 grandson, Samuel Alan Jedlicka of Springdale; his mother, Jean of Mt. Pleasant; 1 brother Charles Wandling and his wife Shirley of Mt. Pleasant; 2 sisters - Susan Hill and her husband Tom and Jane Sammons, all of Iowa City.
His father precedes Gary in death.
