Clarence "Junior" Holcomb, 84, of Mount Union, IA, died Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Winfield, IA.
A funeral service for Junior Holcomb will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, February 21st at the Trenton United Methodist Church in Trenton. Pastor Jeffrey A. McPheron will officiate. Burial will be in the Trinity Cemetery, rural Mount Union, with graveside military honors conducted by the Henry County Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 9:00 PM on Saturday, February 20th at the Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 North Main Street, Mount Pleasant. The family will be present to receive friends from 5-7 PM Saturday evening.
Clarence Holcomb, Jr. was born on the family farm near Packwood in rural Wapello County, Iowa. He was the son of Clarence and Gertrude (Thomas) Holcomb. He attended rural country school. Clarence worked on the family farm until he was called to the service of his country. He entered the United States Army on January 22, 1952 at Ft. Des Moines, Iowa. He was sent overseas for duty in Germany. Junior was honorably discharged as a PFC on January 7, 1954 at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. On July 14, 1962 at the Rome Baptist Church in Rome, IA, Junior was united in marriage to Dorothy Uldine Cocherell. Mrs. Holcomb died Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at the Sunrise Terrace Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Winfield.
Junior was a farmer all of his life. For 19 ½ years, he farmed for the McAllister Seed Company. He then went to work as a Road Maintainer Operator for Henry County. He retired from Henry County in 1993.
Junior was a member of the Trenton United Methodist Church and served the church in various capacities. He was a member of the Mt. Union Booster Club, often popping the popcorn for their booth at the Midwest Old Threshers Reunion. Junior combined occupation and hobby in his lawn mowing business. He tended to several lawns in the area. He enjoyed sitting and home and shelling walnuts.
Those thankful for sharing in Junior life includes a daughter and her husband, Sally and Tony Huddleston of Mt. Pleasant. A granddaughter, bailey Huddleston of Mt. Union; 2 great grandchildren - Parker and Liam Huddleston of Mt. Union. 4 brothers - Harry Holcomb of Clinton, MO, Grant Holcomb and wife Judy of Florence, AZ, Jack Holcomb and wife Bev of Rochester, IN and Jim Holcomb and wife Myrna of Fairfield, IA; 5 sisters - Thelma White and husband Jim of Iowa City, IA, Mrs. Velma Hummel of Burlington, IA, Mable hart and her husband Chuck of Ottumwa, and Trudy Hey and Sarah Poss, both of Florida, and numerous nieces and nephews.
His parents, wife, a daughter - Holly Holcomb and a sister, Martha Filson, precede Junior in death.
